Dry as a bone and full of amazing flavour. This is the paradox of dry wines from Pfalz: ultra-modern and exactly the same as they were in 1850.
The grapes for the Win Win come from “Grosses Gewächs” (German for Premier Cru) vineyard sites that could include Reiterpfad, Kalkofen and Kieselberg, with red sandstone and limestone. It’s made in 50% large oak barrels and 50% stainless steel.
The Win Win Riesling is a wine for those who want to discover, or perhaps rediscover what great Riesling is really about. Complex, elegant, finessed with gorgeous citrus lime, a fleck of pepper long, dry finish, and a zip of acidity at the end.
One of Germany’s oldest wineries, Weingut von Winning was founded in 1849 and given a new lease of life by Achim Niederberger in 2007. He brought in the eponymous winemaker, Stephan Attman and, well, the results speak for themselves.
This is one of my favourite wines of all time and has become one of the go-to reference points for top quality white winemaking in Europe. It is now one of the most easily recognized German wines in Ireland and the quality sells the story to lovers across almost all stylistic preferences – from old-fashioned to modern, classic to avant-garde. It really is (excuse it…) a winner.
