A delicious white Burgundy from grapes grown around the region of the very fashionable Saint Aubin.
Unfiltered and almost entirely made without any sulphur dioxide, this is a gorgeously cloudy, lively and enticingly aromatic wine, showing how you can make excellent and stable wines within natural parameters. Minerality and ripe fruit with honey and nuts on the nose, lead to a wonderful broad and tropical palate that is complex and textural. This is a superbly balanced wine as the 2021 vintage was noteworthy for its acidity and challenging ripening conditions: neither of these is evident in this wine, except that there is excellent freshness and balance. It is really good!
This wine is made by Julien Altaber, a native of Auvergne who grew up in the south Burgundy region of Macon. Living around wine led him to many work experiences before he started making wine for himself in 2006 and then buying his own parcel of vines in 2010.
It’s a slow process becoming a super-star winemaker, but he’s clearly on the right track. Hugely respected and at the very approachable and consistent end of the Natural Wine movement, his wines are generous and reflective of their place, as he says himself: “my goal is not to make a Grand Vin but rather a True Wine, honest with maximum drinkability”. Our sort of goal!
