This is a really wonderful Chardonnay, made by one of California’s pioneering wineries.
Famed as one of the original Rhône Rangers, Bob Lindquist added Chardonnay to his repertoire and the results were instantly significant. This is both elegant, refined and bright, while offering a rich, mouth-coating texture. Flavours of melon, pear, golden apples and baking spices are highlighted by flinty notes and a citrus finish. There’s a lot going on in each glass!
Grown in the cooler Santa Maria Valley zone of Santa Barbara County, the vines are planted on gravel and sandy soils and are a selection of the finest Chardonnay clones in use today. The vineyards are Biodynamically and Organically farmed and come from the famous Bien Nacido vineyard. At harvest, the grapes are cold soaked for 48 hours before fermentation in oak barrels and subsequent ageing in 100% French oak barrels, 15% of which are new, including a fine-lees ageing period of eight months minimum.
This is as traditional and Burgundian as you can get!
The results are simply breathtaking (especially for the value) as you get super-refined mouthfeel and elegance of texture, intensity and length, all balanced by the fruit flavours that come from the Californian climate: ripe yellow fruits with minerality and citrus notes from the cooler climate and soil types. Really, really impressive.
The label is a Californian Poppy, growing among the vines, in case you’re trying to work it out.
