Made from the Sangiovese clone found only in the southern Tuscan hills towns, this wine is a delicious and vibrant expression of Antinori family’s vision for Tuscany, worked-out in the revered village of Montalcino.
A delicious and juicy red that delivers loads of red fruit, summer pudding and really clear strawberry and red cherry. Citrus notes and red petals decorate the nose and reappear in the palate – it’s just so gorgeous! The acidity is balanced by ripeness of fruit and broad, juicy tannins that support all those lovely fruit flavours plus tobacco and subtle spice notes on a long, long finish.
The Pian delle Vigne estate is just over three miles south-west of the town of Montalcino, covering an area of 184 hectares, of which 83 under vine, at an altitude of 130 metres above sea level. Antinori bought the estate in 1995, the first year that the Pian delle Vigne Brunello was produced.
Stylistically this wine has always looked to the fruit: which is to say that they have always used large oak barrels for production, rather than smaller barriques, thus preserving the fruit characteristic instead of the heavy oak-influences that were becoming the norm in much of the DOCG and even the DOC of Rosso di Montalcino. What’s so telling about this decision is that these days, this is the style that has become the norm – a more Burgundian approach, if you will, to vineyard and grape.
