Old Road Wine Company Grand Mere Semillon

Old Road Wine Company focus on making wines from old vines in Franschhoek and each wine pays a tribute to the history of the region.

The grapes for the Grand Mere Semillon were sourced from an old bush vine vineyard planted in 1936 at 350m above sea level, with a planting density as high as 7,000 vines per hectare. That is double the usual planting density in South Africa and the yields per vine are very low, resulting in an intense concentration of aromas and flavours.

A third of the wine is wild fermented and the wines is then matured in old French oak barrels to help harmonise the flavours, add texture, and soften the acidity. The wine is also stirred on the lees to add further complexity.

An elegant and refined Semillon, with opulent pear, kumquat, pineapple, citrus peel, candied lemon and exotic spice flavours. It has a richly textured mouthfeel and mouth watering acidity and minerality.
