Macallan Red Collection 40 Year Old Whisky
The Macallan Red Collection is a limited-edition series of extremely rare Macallan Whiskies which celebrates the history and craftmanship of the distillery. The name Red Collection pays homage to the colour red which is intertwined throughout their history.
The significance of the colour red runs deep in The Macallan’s history, tracing its origins back to Alexander Reid, the founder of the distillery in 1824. Reid, a farmer and teacher, bore the surname meaning ‘the red one’ in Scots, originally linked to red hair.
Fast forward almost a century to 1903, Roderick Kemp, The Macallan’s owner, introduced The Macallan Choice Old range. This distinguished line was shipped in cases adorned with a distinctive red print, setting it apart from the distillery’s existing whiskies packaged in black ink.
Jumping ahead another eight decades to 1980, The Macallan released its then-oldest vintage, a 40-Year-Old single malt whisky. Under the ownership of Allan Shiach, red once again took the spotlight as he adorned the coveted bottles with a red ribbon, symbolizing both their age and value.
The Macallan Red 40 was laid down in hand-picked oak casks and left to slumber for 40 years. Upon nosing, the experience is complex and layered, unveiling a symphony of aromas that include dried fruits such as figs and raisins, intermingled with notes of dark chocolate, oak, leather, vanilla, and subtle hints of spice.
- On the palate, the whisky offers an exceptionally smooth and full-bodied character, where the harmonious blend of flavours unfolds.
- Expect the richness of dried fruits, the sweetness of toffee, the influence of oak and dark chocolate undertones.
- The finish is luxurious and lingering, showcasing a balance of sweet, spicy, and oaky.
Macallan Red Collection 40 Year Old Whisky is released in extremely small quantities and therefore these bottles are highly collectable.
