This fourth instalment tells the tale of Ian Hunter’s establishment of Laphroaig’s malting floors, the same ones used at the distillery today. It also features a 34-year-old non-chill filtered whisky, matured in Ex-Bourbon and first fill European Oak Oloroso Sherry casks, offering a unique peated single malt whisky in this fourth book.

- The nose is smoky with rich dried fruit
- Notes of leaf tobacco, Eucalyptus, fresh straw, and sweet notes of golden syrup, cinder toffee, heather honey and crushed black pepper
- The palette is peaty and sweet, barbecued pork with sweet honey marinade
- Together with notes of peach and orange blossom, a touch of iodine and earthy floral notes
- The finish is ashy with wood smoke lingering
To get the most out of the the right glassware is essential. To see the colour, breathe the aroma, dive into the complex layers of flavour, and fully taste the long finish. A tulip-shaped snifter glass of uncut lead crystal is ideal.
Fill the glass with Laphroaig 34 year old Ian Hunter book 4 at room temperature. If you’re going to dilute the liquid with water, they recommend soft Scottish water. But really any good – cool but un-chilled – water will do.
