This is a stunning, smooth, complex and brilliant wine that will make you wonder about many topics, including how life can be this good. This is gorgeous wine: complex and never too heavy or overpowering.
Sweet spice on the nose with dried flowers and chestnut honey over the dark red and black fruit core. The soft and smooth palate has blackberry, blueberry and rose petals with savoury flavours of forest floor (‘sotto bosco’ in Italian) that are supported by silky, ripe tannins.
This wine is made in Gaja’s native Piemonte, grown in the estate farmed by the Moresco family, hence the name. It’s located in the commune of Barbaresco in the tiny village of Treiso and the Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes (50% and 40% respectively) grown here are augmented by some Merlot (about 10%) from neighbouring vineyards. It’s all very traditional (except the Merlot) and the Langhe appellation is one that suits the Gaja style so well – a reflection of single site, but also the region as a whole. The results are, of course, the reflection of the vineyard management but also the very careful winery approach, which is to vinify parcels and grape varieties completely separately and blend them right at the end, just before bottling. This is more expensive and labour-intensive, but it works and allows for adjustments to the final wine right up until the end, as well as allowing for each component to be fully expressive.
