Domaine de l’Horizon L’Esprit de l’Horizon Blanc
Located in the tiny plot of terroir heaven that is the Catalan village of Calce, a short hop from the Spanish border, German-born Thomas Teibert has developed a reputation for making wines with utmost elegance and finesse. It is all down to the terroir, the diverse soils and ancient vines, with an average age of 70 years. There is a lot of chalk among a mosaic of soil types – from multi-coloured slate and schist to iron-rich marl to alluvial gravel.
L’Esprit de l’Horizon Blanc is a blend of 60% Macabeu and 40% Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains, from old vines planted on limestone soils. The wine undergoes wild fermentation with indigenous yeast in old oak foudre barrels before being aged for 9 months on the fine lees.
The wine has beautiful natural acidity with a citrus core but also some more savoury, slightly oxidative notes of russet apple and blanched almond. There is a lovely weight to the wine too, presumably from the extra time spend resting on the lees,
A great match for shellfish, summer salads, or even an apricot tart.
