This is arguably one of the most popular wines that has hit the market in the past decade. Certainly in its price point there are few others that can consistently deliver complexity, quality and value for money in such a classy and desirable bottle. It’s a triumph of quality over design, with the design being one of the most-admired and award-winning designs any wine bottle has received.
It’s a dense and rich wine that is loaded full of dense strawberry coulis, bramble and vanilla, coconut and mocha notes. It shows that Toro as a region can rival the quality and value that other Spanish regions have made famous. If you like smooth and approachable wines that deliver a large whack of dark fruit, yet familiar fruit and spice characteristics, this is a wine you have to try!
Sandy soils and a high level of granitic rocks are the characteristics of these vineyards that the Matsu owners have collected and that they source from growers that they have worked with since 2005. Aged for 14 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels, the Tempranillo vines (here called Tinta del Toro) are able to age and mature like, well, fine old wines. This wine is made from grapes that are grown on 90-year-old vines.
