This is a smashing wine!
Gorgeously rich, smooth and full with enough acidity to balance the mouth-coating roundness and lush black berry, cherry and plum fruit flavours.
You’ve never tried Saperavi before?
You’ve never had a Georgian wine before?
Two birds: one stone.
This is wine from one of the oldest recorded wine regions in the world. But in terms of execution, this is a superb modern take on history, making it polished, lush and approachable to west-European palates. Silky texture with spice on the finish… yum-scrum.
This is clever winemaking and a very attractive advert for Georgia and its panoply of wines – we’ll get more, but for the moment, do have a go at this!
The winery was founded at some stage in the early-mid 1700s by the Konchoshvili family who had strong ties to the Georgian Orthodox Church, hence the beautiful label which is a picture of Petre Konchoshvili who was a bishop in the 19th century.
The wine is made in a very modern manner – stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks for all but 7% of the grapes, which are fermented in ancient, traditional Qvevri Amphorae made of clay. They mature the wine in various vessels before blending to achieve balance and this magic creamy-smooth texture, ripe tannins and notes of herbs and savoury kitchen spices. It’s really delicious!
