A wonderful, exciting wine from a brilliant, up and coming winery in the Greek region of North Macedonia. Made from the indigenous Malagouzia grape variety (that’s one to add to your collection!) it is dry, fruity, fresh, clean and direct, with flavours of white fruit with ripe notes of lemon and yellow apples. A wonderful range of tropical and ripe golden fruit develop on the palate supported by a really wonderful texture and an impeccable, dry, mango-scented finish.
Really impressive and very delicious – if we’d tried this before summer, we’d have been all over it!
This is the sort of wine that would really enhance a serious, proper posh lunch.

“From a single vineyard at 670m high where local turtles nest, this charming single-varietal expression of Malagousia offers subtle aromas of nutty apricot kernel, white tea, wild blossom and heady eastern spice. The textured palate is balanced by a tightly wound acidity that starts lively and bright with lovely lemon tart tang and finishes crisp with pink grapefruit pith. A gastronomic wine to pair with roast birds and shellfish, or mezze-style dishes.”
Alpha Estate was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and wine-maker Angelos Iatridis, who settled in the northwestern region of Amyndeon after years of experience in various locations of Greece and around the world.
In the relatively short time since, the next generations of the two friends’ families have come to inherit the work, as daughters Angeliki Iatridou and Emorfili Mavridou carry on the tradition today. The intentions are clear: aspiring to evolve, while participating in the team’s common vision for the innate quality of the region’s indigenous grape varieties and its soils.
Decisions made in the vineyard and in the winery are sustainable, organic in practice and as ‘natural’ as they deem fit. Managing the 220 hectares of vineyard is both challenge and opportunity for the realisation of their goals and the wines attest to this in every bottle. These guys are some of the top wines being made in Greece today.
