From one of the Bridesmaid Chianti subzones, this wine gives excellent inspiration as to why it’s sometimes immenesly rewarding to look at these regions as well as Chianti Classico. A lighter Tuscan red, this is full of Chianti’s minerality and texture, but with delightful floral perfume and a more approachable tannin-acid balance. Very fine winemaking, of course from this phenomenal estate, and a real treat for lovers of Tuscany.
Flavours of ripe blackberry, red cherries and a suggestion of spice seem to magically appear as soon as the wine is opened. Juicy and ripe, the palate is kpet in elegance on account of the acidity and the structure. The floral notes of perfume make their delightful appearance at the end. Just gorgeous.
Chianti Rufina is the second-smallest region of Chianti and is only a thousand hectares in total. Selvapiana own about a quarter of them, but only have 54 hectares under vine and 22 planted as olive groves. Over 90% of the grapes are Sangiovese and the vineyards are moderately high in altitude, ranging from 150 to 200 metres above sea level and grown on clay and limestone soils.
The wine is made from grapes that are both hand and machine harvested, gently crushed and macerated (kept on the grapes skins) for 30 days. Fermentation is carried out in concrete tanks and large French oak vats, with the wine remaining in the vessels and aging for a total of 12 months.
