Descrizione
This wine combines two legendary names: the most-celebrated wine maker in Italian history and the most-revered wine producing village in Italy.
A wine that encourages the use of multiple superlatives in descriptions, this is truly profound stuff. At once compelling and inviting, yet austere and structured, it is velvety smooth, dark and complex with flavours of crushed rose petals, licorice, cedar wood and floral notes with balsamic vinegar and orange peel. To say that this is complex is a complete understatement. It is the quintessential version of the Italian “Vino di Meditazione”.
Taken from Gaja’s prime plots in both Serralunga and La Morra communes in Barolo, this wine is made from grapes that are grown with almost zero interference, no pesticides and excellent exposure to sunshine and wind to keep pests and viruses at bay in the most natural manner possible.
Fermented in stainless temperature-controlled steel tanks with a lengthy maceration on the skins, there is concerted effort to retain flavour authenticity and the floral aromatics of the Nebbiolo before the wine goes into ageing. This is carried out in barriques for 12 months and then large oak vats for 18 months and then settling in bottle for six months and more before release.
This comes direct from the winery and will probably live for many decades to come unless you have the temptation resistance of, well, one of us.
