The name “Diatomists” pays tribute to the artisans skilled in the intricate art of diatom arrangement. Diatoms, single-cell algae, create intricate glass shells around themselves. Remarkably, five million years ago, the region of Jerez, where this originates, was underwater.
This unique historical setting explains the soil’s extraordinary richness in diatom fossils microscopic wonders. Crucial for vine growth in the region’s challenging climate of hot, dry summers and sporadic heavy rainfall. The soil’s enhanced porosity, courtesy of diatoms, acts as a natural reservoir, preserving moisture. Providing vital water reserves for the vines during the extensive and sunny growing season.
