Domaine Du Pelican Arbois Savagnin Ouille
This varietal Savagnin provides a refreshing relief from the well-known oxidative style of this variety. Ouille signifies that this Savagnin has been vinified without oxidation, which allows the full potential of this variety’s aromatics to shine.
Fruit-forward, linear, and luscious, the shows flavours of white stone fruit, yellow apple, and chalk.
This has some quince notes and sweetly-scented floral aromatics are followed by a palate with tremendous crunch and snap to it. A wonderful interplay of intense exotic fruits, solid structure and racy, mouth-tingling citrus freshness. Powerful but linear, crystalline and long. Savagnin is an extraordinary varietal which has the same DNA as Traminer.
Since its birth in 2012, Domaine du Pélican has rapidly established itself as one of the leading lights in Jura, producing exceptional that mix finesse with thrilling Jurassien character.
The are between Arbois and Montigny, and all 15 hectares are within 2km of each other, allowing the estate to grow the vineyards bio-dynamically. The terroirs are a mix of Marly clay and gravels with varying exposures from north to south, even more complex than in Burgundy. Whilst a broadly Burgundian approach is employed, there is no doubting the individuality and Jurassien personality of the wines. Little new oak is used and elevage is shorter, lasting twelve months as opposed to eighteen in Volnay. 500 litre casks are used for the Savagnin, which is topped up, as opposed to the more common oxidative Jura method.
